A Cup of Hospitality to Savor with All Five Senses — Introducing ‘Mottenashi Glass,’ Where Yamanaka Lacquerware Meets Takaoka Metalcraft

We are pleased to announce the launch of our new dessert cup, “Mottenashi Glass,” crafted from a combination of wood (Sen) and brass, starting in April 2025 (Price: ¥16,500 incl. tax).

The wooden cup, known for its low thermal conductivity, helps maintain the cold temperature of ice cream, while the brass stem—finished using the traditional techniques of Takaoka metalware—adds both elegance and stability. By blending the heritage of Yamanaka lacquerware with contrasting materials, this piece brings a touch of luxury to after-meal moments.

Inspiration Behind the Development: A “Closing Dish” Born from a Chance Encounter

This project began at a gathering of young business owners in Yamanaka Onsen.

During a casual conversation with the owner of a traditional Japanese restaurant seated nearby, an idea emerged: “What if Yamanaka lacquerware and culinary artisans collaborated?”
This spark led to further discussions, eventually drawing inspiration from the locally popular “Yamanaka Onsen Ice Street.”

From there, the concept took shape: creating a dedicated dessert vessel worthy of concluding a meal.

A Fusion of Craftsmanship

“Mottenashi Glass” combines a smoothly turned wooden cup, crafted by skilled woodworkers, with a brass stem. The result is a piece that enriches both everyday dining and special travel experiences.

Product Features

1. Long-lasting Enjoyment of Flavor – Made from Natural Wood (Sen)
The use of wood, which has low thermal conductivity, prevents ice cream from melting quickly, allowing it to stay cold and delicious until the very last bite.

2. Stability and Elegance – Brass Stem
The brass base, crafted using Takaoka metalworking techniques, has a comfortable weight that enhances stability while adding a refined, luxurious presence.

3. Customizable Finish – Yamanaka Lacquer Colors
The cup can be finished in custom colors using Yamanaka lacquer techniques. It can be tailored to match the theme or interior of a restaurant (custom orders available upon quotation).

4. Warmth of Handcraft – Finished Individually by Local Artisans
This piece brings together the skills of local craftsmen, including woodturners and lacquer artisans from Yamanaka Onsen, as well as metalworkers from Takaoka. It is also suitable as a gift or commemorative item.

Collaboration with the Region and Future Outlook

We are currently working with restaurants and ryokan in Yamanaka Onsen to introduce this product.

By combining local tourism resources with traditional craftsmanship, we aim to create a unique experiential value and contribute to enhancing the Yamanaka Onsen brand.

We are also expanding sales channels to high-end restaurants in metropolitan areas and overseas, responding to the growing demand for luxury experiences driven by the recovery of tourism and inbound travel.
